WELCOME TO INSTITUTE FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES (IPDSS)

The Institute of Peace, Development and Security Studies (IPDSS) formerly Centre for Peace and Development Studies (CPDS) was established in 1997 as an academic entity within the University of Juba. The increased incidents and eruption of conflict and civil wars in Sudan, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region necessitated the creation of the Centre to promote peace by enhancing scientific inquiry into areas of conflict, peace and development. The Institute serves as forum for interdisciplinary study, research, teaching and training and public dialogue on conflict, peace and development issues related to South Sudan, the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region, the African continent and the world.

Vision

Mission

“To provide an enabling training and research environment that equip students, professionals and scholars with advanced knowledge, values and skills in peace and security as the requisites for development through teaching, research and relevant training programs for societal transformation.”

Objectives
  • To train graduates and professionals pursuing careers in government institutions, private sector, NGOs, and regional and international organizations and other prospective students interested in the fields of conflict, peace and development.
  • To provide a better understanding and promote peace and development through research, teaching and training students to apply research tools to situations of conflict and underdevelopment, particularly in South Sudan, the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region and the African continent.
  • To raise awareness about peace and development through public dialogue, public debate, symposia, workshops, seminars and conferences.
  • To provide consultancy services in areas of conflict, peace and development and other areas of its competence.

Academic Programmes

  1. The Institute offers interdisciplinary courses and research in areas of conflict, peace, and development leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters Degree, and Doctor of Philosophy (D.Ph) in Peace and Development Studies. The Institute offers the following academic programmes:
  • Postgraduate Diploma in (1) Peace and Development Studies, (2) Humanitarian and Conflict Studies, (3) Diplomacy and International Relations Studies and (4) Security and Strategic Studies.
  • Master’s Degree in (1) Peace and Development Studies, (2) Humanitarian and Conflict Studies, (3) Diplomacy and International Relations Studies and (4) Security and Strategic Studies.
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Peace and Development Studies.

Admission Requirements and Process:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: The applicant must be a holder of a Bachelor Degree or Bachelor of Science in a relevant field from University of Juba or its equivalent or a holder of undergraduate diploma (three years) with sufficient experience.
  • Masters Degree: The applicant must: be a graduate of University of Juba or its equivalent with an Honors Bachelor Degree (Second Upper); or a graduate of University of Juba or its equivalent with a general Bachelor in a relevant field; or hold other qualifications which may require a pass in a qualifying examination equivalent to Honors standard and submit an outline of a research proposal (1000 words). The Master’s degree program will be by course work and dissertation or by research only.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (D.Ph): The applicant must: hold Masters Degree in Peace and Development Studies of the Centre; or hold a Masters Degree in relevant fields in the University of Juba or its equivalent; and submit a written initial research proposal (minimum 2000 words) that highlights the topic of the research, literature review and gap, the research questions and hypotheses, research methodology and data collection. The Doctor of Philosophy programme will be by research.

Postgraduate/Masters/PhD

Applications for postgraduate diploma or Masters Degree or Doctor of Philosophy are to be submitted to the Graduate College of the University of Juba.

Other Programmes

Short Courses

The Institute organizes short courses of one to two weeks in peace and development studies, conflict and humanitarian studies, diplomatic studies and strategic studies. The participants of these short courses are awarded attendance certificates.

Research

The Institute supervises and administers the dissertations undertaken by the students of postgraduate diploma, Masters Degree and Doctor of Philosophy (D.Ph). The Centre also conducts its own research in the areas of its competence.

Conferences and Training Workshops

The Institute organizes conferences, symposia, colloquia and workshops on areas of peace, development, humanitarian issues, diplomacy and strategic issues either by itself or in collaboration with other institutions within the University and other national, regional and international institutions and organizations.

Consultancy Services:

The Institute provides consultancy services on issues related to peace, humanitarian issues, development, diplomacy and strategic issues either by itself or in collaboration with other institutions within the University and other national, regional and international institutions and organizations.
