The University of Juba hosted a two-day workshop on 24th June 2025 and 26th June,2025, under the theme “The Importance of AI in Higher Education: Enhancing Learning and Research for Teachers and Students.” The event was held in the Senate Hall at the Main Administration Building.
Organized as part of a broader initiative to promote innovation and capacity building in higher education, the workshop aimed to introduce academic staff and postgraduate students to the practical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching, learning, and research. It was tailored into two targeted sessions:
- Session for Teaching Staff: Tuesday, 24th June 2025, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
- Session for Postgraduate Students: Thursday, 26th June 2025, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Both sessions were facilitated by Dr. Kwai Malak Kwai Kut, Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Sciences; Director of Standards and Quality Assurance at Upper Nile University; and Founder and Director of the Symbiosis Research Center in Juba, South Sudan.
Day One Seminar
The workshop was inaugurated with welcoming remarks by Prof. Milton Melingasuk Lado, Director of International Cooperation at the University of Juba. In his opening remarks, Prof. Lado highlighted the strategic relevance of AI in modern education systems and outlined the key objectives of the seminar. He introduced Dr. Kwai to the participants and welcomed him to the University of Juba.
Dr. Kwai delivered a comprehensive and thought-provoking presentation on the central theme, shedding light on the transformative role of AI in enhancing educational delivery and research productivity. His presentation covered critical areas such as:
- Key Functions of AI: Data collection, processing, neural network training, model development, and system refinement through continuous feedback.
- Applications in Higher Education: Enhancing learning experiences, automating administrative tasks, improving institutional efficiency, and fostering innovative academic research.
- Ethical Considerations: Emphasizing the responsible and fair use of AI technologies in academic environments
- Strategic Integration: Proposals for incorporating AI tools into future-ready educational frameworks.
Day Two Seminar
The second session, held on Thursday, 26th June 2025, commenced with welcoming remarks by Ms. Rebecca Awuor Deng, Deputy Director of International Cooperation at the University of Juba. In her address, Ms. Deng reiterated the objectives of the seminar, encouraged participants to engage actively and meaningfully, and reintroduced Dr. Kwai Malak Kwai to continue his presentation and interaction with the participants.
In his follow-up presentation, Dr. Kwai revisited and expanded upon the key topics discussed earlier. He emphasized the practical implications of AI in streamlining academic processes, enhancing research capabilities, and driving innovation within institutions of higher learning. Additionally, he addressed both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI integration in education.
This workshop formed part of a wider seminar initiative designed to cater to the distinct needs of students, academic, and non-academic staff. By fostering awareness and technical understanding of AI, the University of Juba reaffirmed its commitment to advancing digital transformation and innovation in the higher education sector.
