On Tuesday, August 20th, 2024, the Directorate of Human Resource Management, University of Juba hosted a three-day workshop for the staff of the Human Resource Department in the Dean’s Board Hall, focusing on “Regulations and Challenges of Human Resource Management: Essential Skills for Modern Human Resource Professionals.” This event aimed to enhance the staff’s understanding of contemporary HR challenges and equip them with essential skills to navigate the evolving landscape of Human Resource Management. The workshop was organized by Mr. Abdalla Belo, Assistant Registrar for Administration and Professional Development, and was attended by Dr. Albert Kuany, Deputy Registrar for Administration and Finance, highlighting the university’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of its Human Resource Department through targeted professional development.
The staff engaged in discussions on the challenges and inefficiencies faced in Human Resource Management (HRM). Staff were divided into four groups to brainstorm on possible solutions. The first group proposed solutions like training HR staff, providing employee incentives, implementing a new HR system, and enhancing leadership skills and digital literacy. The second group identified obstacles including managing adversity, communication issues, lack of incentives, absence of job descriptions, reliance on manual systems instead of an HR database, and conflicts of interest during interviews. The third group’s focus was on adhering to civil, labor, and blue book laws, as well as monitoring employee performance and adapting to cultural changes. Finally, the last group emphasized the importance of timely salary payments and the necessity for the HR Directorate to be equipped with computers.
During the closing remarks, Dr. Albert Kuany, Deputy Registrar for Administration and Finance, expressed his enthusiasm and apologized on behalf of the Registrar. He emphasized the importance of the workshop, thanking Mr. Abdalla Belo, the organizing committee, and the participants for their commitment. Dr. Kuany also assured that a series of workshops would be held in the future. He further informed the HR staff that copies of the workshop documents would be printed and distributed to them, and that copies of the Civil Act Law and Labor Act Law would be made available in the HR director’s office.
