Background and Introduction into the School of Medical Laboratory

The University of Juba was established in 1975 and became operational in 1977 in the then Sudan and from the time of its inception the motto of the University of Juba has been “relevance and excellence.” It is the oldest University among the five (5) public Universities of South Sudan. However, after the cession of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011 and the subsequent years that followed, the administration of the University of Juba has improved and modified the mission, vision, strategic plans, and core values of the University, these new policies were successfully endorsed by the council of the University of Juba on 4th December 2014. Indeed this was the milestone that opened the way for the establishment of new Schools and centers of learning for the student population of this country. Hence, the University of Juba is aiming to increase the student enrollment from 21,000 in 2020 to 60,000 by 2030. Therefore, to realize one of the goals of expanding access to higher education, the administration of the University of Juba took the initiative to establish the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences among others. This was by the resolution of the Deans’ Board No: 07-2020 held on Tuesday 7th July 2020, thereafter, an Interim Dean was appointed to oversee the development of the curriculum and mobilize resources for the establishment of the School by 2021.

School of Medical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Juba aims to equip students with essential knowledge of laboratory diagnostics and various clinical techniques crucial in the prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis treatment of physiological and pathological conditions of patients in healthcare facilities. It is important to understand that Laboratory tests are extremely valuable and are responsible for making appropriate medical decisions by medical practitioners. However, the demand for medical laboratory professionals is very critical especially in the context of South Sudan, due to the lack of qualified medical laboratory cadres. Thus provision of medical laboratory professionals would provide an impetus for the delivery of quality healthcare services to citizens within the country and beyond. This program is designed to offer foundation courses of pre-medical in sciences in the first year and then more advanced courses in different specialties in the subsequent years on campus and the final fourth (4th) year students will be oriented to more clinical rotations in public healthcare facilities /Hospitals. Upon completion of all the requirements graduates will be awarded with Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
